what is your take on renaming HR to something like “People & Organization”?
I am a new HR leader in a modern real estate company without an HR (instead business/strategy) background, and dislike the term “human resources”. (My own title by the way is already “Exec. Director People & Strategy”) I want to push a talent-focused agenda and introduce tools and processes seen in more modern organizations (but it will be a longer process due to the composition and previous experience of our Executive Board).
Looking forward to your take!
Thanks in advance,
Thanks for your message. Our position on titles is that things like HR and Human Capital or Personnel are pretty outdated (not sure what that says about our company title!) but that first and foremost we should focus on changing the ‘contents’ and worry less about the ‘wrapping’. We have seen HR teams change their name but not do anything differently and this is worse than leaving the title as it is, as it can damage credibility. If we are going to give our function a brand overhaul, then we need to change what we do first – and then we’ll have the credibility to change the look and feel – including the title.
Good luck with your future-focused agenda! Yes, it will take time …. but it’s worth it!
