I know of very few people who have not read their job description recently (within the last year or so) or even who know where to find it. Are Job Descriptions really necessary these days?

I think you need to have a brief Job Profile but the description of what you do changes from month to month or quarter to quarter so it is about chnage=ingyour focus in an ever-changing environment.

We are going through the process of updating our JDs at the moment and I must say I agree. People do such a variety of things as part of thier job and it’s hard to document all of that in a simple HD…

We encourage our clients to focus people’s minds on what success looks like rather than issue a list of duties.

Clear customer and colleague outcomes defined + letting talented people use their own intelligence to determine how they get to the result is much more engaging than a long list of ‘responsibilities’. And therefore likely to lead to better performance

Joel, this is exactly what I am trying to achieve here.

I do not like to list responsibilities and tasks.  I want to recruit people with talent, challenge them with short and medium-term objectives and get them to take responsibility and initiative to achieve them.
